Lecture 1 - First Impressions

Perception definition:

1) Process by which people translate sensory impressions into a coherent and unified view of the world around them. Though necessarily based on incomplete and unverified (or unreliable) information, perception is 'the reality' and guides human behavior in general.

2)
Perception is our sensory experience of the world around us and involves both the recognition of environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli. Through the perceptual process, we gain information about properties and elements of the environment that are critical to our survival. Perception not only creates our experience of the world around us; it allows us to act within our environment".

perception is a basic way of living. It is the process which helps us humans take in and observe important information which help us in life. for example, first impressions and the 5 senses.

My first lesson was based around first impressions. We had two girls come to our lesson today and we had to come up with ideas of what type of person they were. For example, they may have been a sporty person and or a very shy person. I was told today that it only takes 17 seconds to understand what type of person someone is. I actually believe that... We were all given out a piece of paper and had to put down our initial thoughts of the girls. I have to say I'm not good at judging people.. We then had to bring our ideas together to the class and find out how good we were at judging some by their first impressions. We judged their personality by the way they were dressed and reacted in front of a crowd. I think i judgeed one of the girls well as her appearance gave much away. She looked a bit uncomfortable and on edge therefore this showed me that she felt a bit shy standing in front of strangers, whereas, the other girl looked more confident because she had good eye contact with everyone in the class.

First impressions of someone could be their image or their body language. the way someone greets with you, the first time you meet them. they could have warm welcoming as shown below in the image. you can judge the person by the way they would greet you. especially, if they have a smile on their face which shows that they are happy in meeting you. you are able to read they body language straight away.
